STEPS
1Prepare a pair of cupcake liners.
To make the butterfly's wings, you will need a pair of cupcake liners. You can choose identical ones or go for different colors like I did.
2Flatten the cupcake liners.
Carefully spread open and flatten each cupcake liner.
3Make the first fold.
Fold up ½ inch or 1¼ cm from the bottom edge of the cupcake liner. This first fold defines the size of the succeeding folds.
4Make the second fold.
Flip the cupcake liner over. Fold up ½ inch or 1¼ cm again from the bottom. The edges of the second fold should line up nicely with the first.
5Fold the entire cupcake liner.
Repeat Steps 3 and 4, flipping the cupcake liner over then folding. Continue until you've folded the entire cupcake liner. Don't worry if your last fold is smaller than the rest.
6Fold the second cupcake liner.
Similarly fold the second cupcake liner.
7Fold in half.
Fold each cupcake liner in half so that you create a middle crease.
8Apply glue on the middle crease.
Apply glue on the middle crease of one cupcake liner.
9Glue the pair together.
Put the two cupcake liners together, aligning them at the middle crease and at the edges.
Press on their middle crease to glue them together. Let the glue dry.
10Fold a pipe cleaner in half.
You will need a pipe cleaner to hold the wings together and make the butterfly's antennae as well. Fold the pipe cleaner in half.
11Fix the pipe cleaner in place.
Twist the ends of the pipe cleaner around the cupcake liners' middle crease.
12Open up the folds on one side.
Carefully open the cupcake liner folds on one side of the pipe cleaner.
13Repeat on the other side.
Repeat on the opposite side to complete the butterfly's two pairs of wings.
14Create the antennae.
Trim the ends of the pipe cleaner to the desired antenna length. Curl the tips of the pipe cleaner downwards.
15Decorate the butterfly.
Your cupcake liner butterfly looks pretty as is but you can always add an accent or two. An easy idea you can try is to glue a button, a foam shape or a plastic gem at the center of the butterfly.
More Ideas
Decorate the antennae.
Besides decorating the center of the butterfly, you can also accent the tips of the antennae. Leave the tips of the antennae straight, then glue some paper or foam shapes, sequins or small plastic gems at the tips. I placed heart-shaped beads on mine.
Make an oval body.
If you want to make a butterfly body, cut out an oval shape from paper, craft foam, felt or fabric. Glue this oval in Step 15. Glue a pair of wiggle eyes as well.
I made a fuzzy oval body using a pipe cleaner. The steps are described below.
To make a fuzzy pipe cleaner body:
- Start out with a half piece of pipe cleaner, which is about 6 inches long.
- Fold 2 inches on one end.
- Roll the pipe cleaner tightly around the first fold.
- Continue until you've rolled the entire length of the pipe cleaner.
