Make your own medieval princess cone hat out of construction paper or craft foam. Decorate the hat with streamers, gems, sequins, stickers and other pretty accents.
Things to decorate your hat with: ribbons, fabric, boas, sequins, stickers, rhinestones, glitter glue, paper cut-outs, foam shapes, etc.
STEPS
1Create a large compass.
Tie the end of a piece of string around the middle of a pencil. Make sure that the other end of the string all the way to the tip of the pencil is at least 14 to 16 inches long. (Use a longer string if you need a larger cone hat.)
2Draw an arc.
Use tape or your thumb to keep the free end of the string on the corner of your construction paper. While pulling tightly, draw an arc from one edge of the paper to the adjacent edge, forming a quarter circle.
3Cut along the arc.
Cut the paper along the arc. Position the quarter circle so that the arc is at the bottom and the tip is on top.
4Trim the tip.
Trim a little bit off the tip.
5Make crepe paper streamers.
Cut five or more strips from different colors of crepe paper, each strip about 1½" wide and longer than your cone hat's height. Gather the strips together on one end.
6Twist the ends tightly.
Twist the gathered ends tightly. This will make it easy to attach the streamers to your cone hat.
7Tape the streamers.
Tape the twisted end of your crepe paper streamers onto the tip of the quarter circle.
8Form a cone.
Roll the quarter circle into a cone, making the base as broad as the paper will allow. Staple at the base. Try on the hat. If the hat is too big, remove the staple and re-adjust the cone's base to fit on your head. Staple it when you get a comfortable fit.
9Glue the seams.
Apply white glue along the seams.
10Press at the seams.
Press along the seams from the inside of the cone to glue it in place.
11Add a chin strap.
You can add a chin strap to secure the hat on your head. Once the glue dries on your hat, punch a pair of opposite holes along the base of the hat. Tie the ends of an elastic string around the holes.
12Decorate the hat.
Transform the plain cone hat into a pretty princess hat by decorating with ribbons, plastic gems, boas, sequins, stickers, rhinestones, glitter glue, fabric scraps, craft foam and other notions.
More Ideas
Use craft foam.
Instead of using construction paper to make the cone hat, use craft foam for a sturdier and textured princess hat.
We also decorated the tip of this purple princess cone hat with a sheer veil instead of crepe paper strips. The steps for making the veil are described below.
Decorate the tip with a veil.
Cut a large sheet of tissue paper or any sheer fabric—mine is about 20" x 30". Fold the sheet in half, lengthwise.
Pinch the sheet 1/3 of the way along the folded edge.
Lift the sheet by the pinched end and arrange the folds of the flowing material.
Twist the pinched end tightly, then bind with transparent tape. Tape this end onto the tip of the quarter circle (See Step 7 above).
