Draw a pair of large identical butterflies or print out two copies of any of these large butterflies (Large butterfly 1 to 4) on colored A4 or Letter size cardstock.
2Color the butterflies.
Color the butterflies. If you printed out our butterfly templates, you can draw and add more details if you like.
3Add more accents.
Create sparkle and texture using glitter glue or puffy paint. Fill entire sections with glitter glue or create accents like dots, lines and patterns.
4Cut out the butterflies.
Once the glitter glue dries, cut out both butterflies.
5Trace the butterfly onto cardboard.
Skip Steps 5 and 6 if the cardstock you used to print the butterflies are thick or heavy. Otherwise you will need to reinforce the butterflies with cardboard. To do this, trace a butterfly onto a piece of cardboard then cut it out.
6Glue the cardboard.
Glue one butterfly onto the piece of cardboard, aligning them at the edges.
7Create a handle.
Prepare one large craft stick to make into the fan's handle. You can decorate it with colored markers or paint it.
8Glue the handle.
Glue the craft stick at the back of the cardboard-reinforced butterfly. Position the stick in the middle, with the top as close to the butterfly's head as possible.
9Create antennae.
Cut a pair of 2-inch long thin strips of paper and glue them at the back of the butterfly's head to create antennae.
10Glue the butterflies together.
Glue the second butterfly at the back of the first, aligning them at the edges.
11Glue eyes and other details.
As an option, you can glue details such as wiggle eyes, sequins, stickers, or rhinestones.
12Use the butterfly fan.
Wait for the glue to dry before using your butterfly fan.
More Ideas
Include the antennae from the template.
The butterfly's antennae from our printable butterflies are quite delicate and intricate for kids to cut. With some adult help, they can be included when cutting one of the butterflies in Step 4.
Make a butterfly mask.
Think the butterfly is just too pretty to use as a fan? Cut out a pair of eyeholes and use your butterfly as a beautiful mask!
